Green Cardamom is generally produced in the tropical regions of the world. The total world production of this spice is around 35,000 – 45,000 tons p.a. (Source: Spices Board). The largest producing country is Guatemala followed by India. Other producers are Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea and Tanzania.
Consumption of cardamom has sharply increased throughout the world in the last two decades. The major consumer countries of cardamom are the Middle East countries, India, Pakistan, European countries, the US, and Japan. Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and South-East Asian countries such as India, etc., account for more than 60% of the world’s consumption.
Saudi Arabia is the single largest importer of cardamom in the world, followed by Kuwait. The major importers are:
- Saudi Arabia
- The Netherlands
- United States of America.
The major usage of Cardamom is as an ingredient in hot beverages & dishes. However, usage in Nutraceuticals and Ayurvedic pharmacies is also growing. Cardamom usage as a flavour is also growing.
