Japan imports Green Cardamom mainly for industrial use as an ingredient. Since 2009, the imports by Japan have been mainly from Guatemala. This is because of the stringent pesticide residue levels implemented by Japan Health Authorities. As Guatemalan Cardamom is largely a home grown industry by small planters, this is not an issue for Guatemala but a major irritant for Indian Cardamom. The market size is expected to be about 300-350 tons. This is dominated by Guatemala. After having lost this market completely, Indian exporters have only recently started exporting again to Japan in very small quantities. Recent visits by Japanese technologists have brightened hopes that Indian cardamom planters will be able to grow cardamom to the MRL levels demanded by Japanese importers.
